story

​​More Better Bikes began as a simple idea: help people keep their bikes working beautifully, and turn donated bikes into high-quality rebuilt bikes at low or no cost. What started in half of a garage is now a storefront with all the bells and whistles (literal bells!) for making it happen. Generous donors saw the vision and gave money, time, and resources to get MBB going and sustain its mission. We are eternally grateful to them.

More Better Bikes began as a dream of our founder, Dr. Kim Skattum, a retired pastor who decided to help people with basic bicycles. As the service grew, and the shop moved from the garage to a shed behind his house and now to a storefront in the Crossroads Community Center, the staff grew as well. It began with a single team member and soon grew as more youth asked to work in the shop. Today, More Better Bikes has 15 paid students and 8 high-quality "older" volunteers.

Our team

Our mission is simple: "Low- or no-cost quality bicycles and professional repair, according to ability to pay." What started in 2017 as a simple service for friends and neighbors in a garage struck a chord with our broader community. Today, that mission is lived out every day for hundreds of people, as an alternative to high-cost bicycles and repairs.

We believe everyone should be able to ride a good-quality bicycle, regardless of ability to pay. Every year, hundreds of bicycles sit unused or are discarded or abandoned. We accept them as donations, in any condition, and restore the best ones to original working condition. Bikes too far gone to ride are stripped for parts, which we use to offer low- or no-cost repairs.
